Baker Bio

Baker was born in 1953 in Vienna, Austria. He grew up in Florida, however, where his family moved soon after his birth. His love of wildlife and the outdoors, so evident in his work, is derived in part from the many summers he spent exploring the mountains and woods of Arkansas while staying on his grandparent's farm. His inspirations are many and diverse, ranging from the fantasy world created by J.R.R. Tolkien, to his interest in Oriental culture and philosophy, and his own Native American heritage. J.W. is a self-taught artist whose artistic origins began with the media of inks and watercolors. It has progressed to a mastery of the airbrush, which is currently his primary means of artistic expression. He is best known for his incredible wildlife depictions, but also paints Native American portraits and themes, as well as wizards, dragons, fairies, and other inhabitants of the Fantasy world.

The works that have brought him the most recognition are his 'wearable art' creations, which are wildlife portraits on denim jackets and other wearing apparel. He is equally at home, however, on the more conventional media of canvas, illustration board and watercolor paper. J.W. is an artist who will use whatever medium it takes, in whatever combination necessary to communicate the inspiration that motivates his art.

J.W. Baker currently resides in Florida with his wife.
